ROMANTICISM COMES OF AGE

Anthroposophical Publishing Company, 1944. First Edition. Hardcover. First Printing of this collection of essays including 'Of the Consciousness of the Soul,' 'Speech, Reason and Imagination,' essays on Coleridge, Hamlet, and Dante, and others.' 163, [1] pp. Demi 8vo, red cloth stamped in blue. Edges foxed, spine faintly sunned, otherwise a clean and sharp copy with tight, square binding. In the preface, Barfields relates the progress of his conversion to the anthoposophical cause and how he 'acknowledged Rudolf Steiner with reverence as il maestro di color che sanno--master of those who know.' Barfield relays with sadness his failure to arouse the interest of his friends: 'even thse who were prepared to lend at least a sympathetic ear to my own observations on the subjects of poetry and semantics, were not in the least interested in the news about Rudolf Steiner which I was so anxious to bring them. They simply would not listen.' This latter statement betrays the grief Barfield felt over the cessation of his 'Great War' with his longtime friend, C. S. Lewis. The two held long and arduous debates over philosophy, literature, and metaphysics which Lewis broke off after his conversion to Christianity and Barfield's embrace of Steiner. VERY GOOD.
