First Printing of the American Edition, a unique instance when the American precedes the British edition, with the Houghton Mifflin edition relesed October 31, 1967 and with a rather more attractive binding than the Allen & Unwin edition released March 28, 1968. A very nice copy of this collaborative work presenting the original poetic songs of Tolkien's Legendarium set to music by composer and pianist Donald Swan, illustrated throughout with Tolkien's calligraphic Tengwar and with additional illustrations by Samuel Hanks Bryant. Swan performed pieces from the work in progress at Edith and J. R. R. Tolkien's Golden Anniversary celebration.
xii, 68pp. 4to, sewn binding in red-orange cloth, gilt and black stamped spine letteirng, gilt stamped front title and decorative border along the spine; printed on tan wove paper in red, black and gray. Almost unnoticeable bump to the spine tail, otherwise a FINE copy, exceedingly clean and sharp; DJ flaps with shallow chipping, uniformly at all four ends beyond the mylar, perhaps biopredation, else FINE, very crisp and bright.
