'John Gillies, Scots evangelical leader, friend and biographer of George Whitefield, was the first author to conceive the value of bringing the history of revivals together in one work. Though originally published in 1754, and therefore necessarily omitting the great revivals of the last century. there is still reason to support Horatius Bonar's verdict that Gillies' work contains 'a fuller and completer history of the wonderful doings of the Spirit of God than any other extant.' Horatius Bonar (1809-1889) who edited the 1845 edition of Gillies. here reprinted, was himself widely read on the subject of revivals and a witness of their reality in his own times. He supplemented the 1754 edition with additional material including a valuable preface in which he writes: 'The world is still sleeping its 'sleep of death.' The volume before us contains not the history of the sleeping many, but of the waking few. Their story is as full of interest as it is of importance... And when the voice of God awakes not one, but thousands, it may be in a day: when whole villages and districts seem as if arising and putting on new life how intensely and unutterably interesting! 'Such narratives as those with which this work abounds form the true history of the Church, if we are to take our ideas of this from the inspired Church-history given us in the Acts of the Apostles.
