The Family Room is a local non-profit doing powerful and important work partnering with DHS and families in crisis. We are very honored to be able to donate the following books and a gift certificate to their annual Gala Auction. A few seats are still available for anyone wanting to show up and bid on this collection! Cash donations may also be made via their website.

THREE SIGNED BOOKS BY PNW AUTHORS. This collection of three signed and inscribed books by Pacific Northwest authors, each dealing with water, rivers, and other ecological features of the Pacific Northwest. The brief inscription by David James Duncan and his wife, Adrian Duncan, holds a beautiful story that connects with the concerns and priorities of The Family Room. As Duncan has told it in several settings, writing his Great American Novel, The Brothers K, came at great cost to his family. With young children at home, he spent considerable amounts of time at a writing-cabin retreat hammering out that iconic story in an ecstatic fury. After finishing, he promised his Adrian never to ask that of their family again. And so in the years since its publication in 1992, Duncan has busied himself with more manageable projects such as the short stories of and essays of River Teeth. It perhaps goes without saying, but it is not common to see a male author of great American fiction embracing such limitations for the sake of his family. Many of us who had our lives changed by The Brothers K and The River Why are now eagerly awaiting his new novel, Sun House.

Along with this unique collection, we are offering a $50-dollar gift certificate to our brick & mortar shop in North Portland. We specialize in fine humanities books of all kinds, especially Literature, Philosophy, Theology, Art, and History.

Whether you win this auction or not, we encourage everyone to give generously to this powerful and needful organization!

All our best,
