Swiss-Catholic, anti-Nazi, ecumenical visionary, theologian, biblical scholar, mystic: Karrer was a forerunner of Vatican II in many respects and one of the most prominent voices in 20th-century German Catholicism. His translation "put into the hands of simple and educated people alike an edition of the New Testament in good, indeed, beautiful German, in a clearly understandable rendering, which can be used for advanced study or devotional reading. It is without doubt an excellent production which succeeds in bringing out the message of the New Testament in a striking fashion [and] ... make use of the vast research that has been undertaken both in Protestant and Roman Churches in modern times. The 'difficult passages, which Romans have often exploited through tendentious translations to support their claims, are very fairly dealt with here where the aim throughout is to confront the reader with what the New Testament actually says and to initiate the reader into its depths" - T. F. Torrance Review in Scottish Journal of Theology.
