John Baskett, for the University Press, 1738. Hardcover. Folio, 15' x 10.5'. Printed with Book of Common Prayer, Index, and Downame's 1726 Concordance. All three sections and index are separately signed and unpaginated. Full brown Calf over boards, 6 raised bands ruled in gilt with red morocco label and gilt lettering. Woodcut dropcaps on first chapters of all books. Unsophisticated contemporary binding. Fairly worn, hinges loose with still-sound cords, dampstain to fore edge of NT with tide mark extending further toward the rear. Some occasional staining, extremities foxed, FFEP loose. Extensive family record to NT Title verso of the children and grandchildren born to Josiah and Abigail Lane, beginning in 1743. Printer John Baskett was held in some esteem among his colleagues for his advancement in printing technique and quality. In spite of a number of typographical errors, Baskett was ahead of his field in the physical production of books. His printing office was burnt in 1738, and it is uncertain whether this Bible was completed before the fire, or after receiving the customary gifts of presses and type from his colleagues. NT imprint notes 'The assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills,' from whose executors Baskett purchased the old Royal Patent initially given to Christopher Barker. 1662 edition of the BCP notably includes a liturgy for Guy Fawkes day, decrying the regicidal plot. Even through several generations of use, this case holds true Daniell's adage, 'A good Baskett Bible is a thing of beauty in all its parts.' Darlow & Moule 1038; ESTC T90355; David Daniell, 'The Bible In English.'. GOOD. Item #2081
